MM 1: New Skylanders Grades

This will probably be the last Skylanders-themed MM for a while. I can't afford to buy much of anything until my paychecks start kicking in and we need to save anyway. I do have a bunch on my Amazon wish list and my birthday is in a month, but...we'll just see.

For now, here are my final revised grades on my eight Skylanders - one for each element:

Now, if you'll recall, I used the Harry Potter O.W.L. system to grade the 3DS performance (Console is very different and I will probably grade them differently if I try them out on that) in a number of areas. This time, I not only got all my characters' power scrolls, but also truly tested them out and compared them (i.e. damage averages, how long did it take to run from one side of the map to the other without sprinting, etc.) These new grades reflect the new data.

The caterogies are: Attack Speed (how fast attacks come), Attack Power (based on damage averages), Attack Style (how cool the attacks are; purely subjective), Movement Speed (base speed without sprinting), Jump Ability (how well they jump; as this is a platformer, they all make at least an A), and Health (based on size of health bar)

O = Outstanding, E = Exceeds Expectations, A = Acceptable, P = Poor, D = Dreadful, T = Troll.

Dark Spyro       [Magic]
Attack Speed: O
Attack Power: O
Attack Style: O
Movement Speed: D
Jump Ability: E
Health: A

A good all-around character. He's got the highest damage average of my pack and he's a glider, but he's got average health and he's one of the slowest base speeds (though his upgrades can compensate for that). Still, the best from the started pack.

Stealth Elf       [Life]
Attack Speed: E
Attack Power: E
Attack Style: E
Movement Speed: O
Jump Ability: E
Health: D

I stand by basically what I said about her before. She's got decent attack, and she's by far the fastest runner with a slightly higher jump, but even with her Health Scroll bumping her up a grade she's still the one that can't take a hit. Save her for speed sections unless you get really good.

Ignitor     [Fire]
Attack Speed: P
Attack Power: O
Attack Style: A
Movement Speed: P
Jump Ability: A
Health: O

This guy's a tank, pure and simple. He's only one point below Dark Spyro on damage averages, and indeed each hit is actually harder, but his attacks are far slower. He's got a ton of health, but he's slow and an average jumper. Glad I have him, but wouldn't bother with him if he hadn't come with the starter pack.

Drobot     [Tech]
Attack Speed: O
Attack Power: T
Attack Style: O
Movement Speed: D
Jump Ability: E
Health: E

Of course, my personal favorite of the pack has to have the absolute lowest damage average (a 9.8 compared to Dark Spyro's 19!) and the lowest base speed, though he largely overcomes this by having probably the fastest attack speed. Hell, you can just hold down the primary attack button to shoot a neverending volley of lasers. His decent health and gliding ability helps him wait it out. Plus, he's a robot dragon; what's not to love?

Zap     [Water]
Attack Speed: O
Attack Power: D
Attack Style: O
Movement Speed: E
Jump Ability: E
Health: E

Very similar to Drobot in that he's got a low damage average but he attacks quickly and cooly and he has decent health. What makes him slightly better from a numbers standpoint is that he's a fast little bugger and seems to jump slightly farther than most. Not much else to say.

Warnado     [Air]
Attack Speed: O
Attack Power: A
Attack Style: O
Movement Speed: E
Jump Ability: O
Health: O

You would expect the turtle to have the highest health of the pack. You wouldn't expect him to have the speed and jumping abilities that push Warnado over the top. Warnado gets an O in jumping because he can actually float for a short time - not glide in a slow descent, float in place. His only real weak spot is his damage average, and it's still the fourth-highest and overcome by the blazing attack speed. Perhaps this is why he's so "rare".

Hex     [Undead]
Attack Speed: A
Attack Power: P
Attack Style: A
Movement Speed: D
Jump Ability: O
Health: O

From an attack standpoint, Hex is average all around. She's got a low mean damage. Her primary attack is pretty quick but her secondary takes forever. She's also pretty slow. But what makes her fun (other than the fact that she looks pretty cool) is that, like Warnado, she's a floater. This gives her a great battlefield advantage. Plus, she's got amazing health once you find her Health Scroll.

Dino-Rang     [Earth]
Attack Speed: E
Attack Power: A
Attack Style: O
Movement Speed: D
Jump Ability: A
Health: E

You'd think Dino-Rang would be sub-par, since the only outstanding grade is given to the subjective category, but he's amazingly effective at mid-range. It's the secondary attack - a stationary "Buzzarang" - that really makes Dino-Rang a go-to utility fighter, and glad he's my first (and main) Earth Skylander.

I will give more grades when I get more Skylanders, and I will again give them different grades for Console performance if I ever get my hands on that one.
